Special Recognition
... is certainly in order for my friend from Kume, Mr Takeshi Goto!
A great deal of the material for this site has been the direct result of 'Tak's' industry, skill and kindness. Almost all of the modern photos are his, and much of the knowledge we understand of modern Kumejima is a result of information he has supplied.
Among his many talents is photography. Not only has he given us a view of Kume today, but has without any prompting taken some of the old pictures to the same Kume locations to capture before-and-after film studies!
It was Goto-san that Mrs Asako Morton of Florida, through her brother, contacted with the news of this humble website. It was he that then promoted it to the officials of Kumejima Town, the Kumejima School Board and the Kumejima Natural and Cultural Center. Things took off from there!
I also owe a great debt of thanks to Goto-san for taking us under his protection and guidence on our 2003 trip back to Okinawa. Tak and his friend 'Lisa' saw to our every need, made almost all of our reservations, ported us in his vehicle to various functions and parties and was always at our side for translating.
I vow to repay that debt of thanks if ever I can convince he and 'Lisa' to visit us in Virginia!
